Answers to FAQs by Applicants

Is it really essential to follow all the instructions when submitting the application file?
YES. FGS will only process applications submitted according to the filing instructions.

What happens if you receive a letter of recommendation before my application file arrives?
We save the letter of recommendation and add it to the application file upon its arrival.

Is it really necessary to submit a letter of recommendation from my Master’s thesis advisor?
Absolutely.

I still do not have confirmation of my entitlement to a Master’s degree.  May I submit an application file anyway?
An application file may only be submitted after receiving confirmation of entitlement to a Master’s degree (including exam and thesis grades).

Do I first have to find an advisor?
Candidates for the physical sciences, mathematics and computer sciences, and science teaching must find an advisor prior to submitting their application file. Candidates for the life sciences and chemical sciences are first admitted to FGS and are then allotted about two months to find an advisor.

How can I find an advisor?
The best approach is to thoroughly search the Weizmann Institute of Science website, consulting the various faculty and department sites. You may also find the following links useful:
  WIS Scientists by Keywords
More detailed information about research at WIS in the following areas: Cancer, Diabetes, Nanoscience, Environment, Alternative Research
  Scientific Activities
  Current Projects
  Scientists looking for postdoctoral fellows

How can I find contact information for potential advisors?
You may search the WIS Directory (by name).

What happens if an advisor is not found in the allotted time?
Each case is determined individually.

I was a candidate in the past.  Can the material already in your possession be used now?
In general, access to the most current information is desirable and so we prefer that a new application file be submitted with updated information, documents, curriculum vitae, and letters of recommendation. However, a new file must be submitted if the previous application is more than a year old.

Just how important are grades?
All information and documents in the file are taken into consideration, including, obviously, grades. Grades achieved towards a bachelor’s degree are also deemed important.

What are the minimum grades required of a candidate?
As mentioned above, grades do play more than a minor role, but each case is evaluated on an individual basis, taking into account all the information available to the Board of Studies.

What does the admission process entail?
The usual admission process is as follows: Every completed application file is submitted to the appropriate Board of Studies for perusal. The Board considers the application and decides on one of three options:  “Acceptance”, “Rejection”, or an invitation to appear before the Admissions Committee. In the event of “Acceptance” or “Rejection”, the file is transferred with their recommendation to the Dean of the Graduate School for his consideration and decision. You will be notified, in writing, as soon as the decision is made.

Does the Admissions Committee invite every candidate for an interview/exam?
It is the prerogative of the Board of Studies to decide whether or not to invite the candidate for an interview/exam.

What exactly is the Admissions Committee?
The Board of Studies appoints a committee comprised of two to three scientists from the relevant area of study who meets with the candidates for an interview/exam that may last 30-60 minutes.  Among other things, the candidates are evaluated on their general knowledge in the field and more specifically, on the research they conducted in the framework of their Master’s degree studies.
Other parameters, such as: reasoning, creativity, analytical approach, etc., are also evaluated. Following the interview, the committee reports its evaluation and opinion to the Board of Studies regarding admitting the candidate to FGS. Admission of candidates to studies is the prerogative of the Dean of the Graduate School.

What happens after the Admissions Committee convenes?
The Board of Studies reviews the findings of the Admissions Committee and is empowered to accept or reject its conclusions.  The Board of Studies submits its recommendation for “acceptance” or “rejection” to the Dean of the Graduate School. The Dean of the Graduate School evaluates the file, reads the recommendations and decides according to his own judgment.  The candidate will be notified in writing of the decision.

How long does the entire procedure take?
Usually several weeks.

Does Feinberg Graduate School offer any complementary studies?
No.

May I engage in research in the laboratory of a potential advisor during the candidacy period?
All contacts with scientists (whether a potential advisor or someone else) are carried out on a personal basis, independently of the Graduate School.

Is there a special program for physicians?
The Life Sciences Board of Studies is authorized to set a special schedule for physicians accepted for doctoral studies (a personal interview with the Board of Studies Chair is required).

Can a “rejection” be appealed?
Yes.  An appeal in writing must be sent to Feinberg Graduate School.
