Admission Procedures

Pre-requisite for a Review by the Board of Studies
Only complete files (containing all the aforesaid documents) will be referred to the Board of Studies for review.

Finding a Research Group
In mathematics and computer science; in Physics; in Chemistry; and in Science Teaching, a candidate is required to make an arrangement with a potential advisor (a senior ranking WIS research staff member), prior to the submission of the application file and the review of the application by the Board of Studies. In Life Sciences a candidate must find an advisor only after being accepted to the school. The final acceptance, however, is contingent upon arranging with an advisor to agree to supervise the student’s doctoral dissertation (in life sciences these arrangements must be completed within 10 weeks). Please note that the school will not allow a student to start his/her Ph.D. if the potential advisor would be on a leave of absence for more than 3 months during the first year of the students' studies. Information on potential research groups may be found through the following links:

First Screening
Each application is examined by the relevant Board of Studies. The Chair, usually in consultation with the members of the Board of Studies, will recommend whether to accept the candidate, to invite the candidate for an interview (with the Admissions Committee), or reject the application (without an interview). It is important to note that only some of the candidates are actually invited for an interview with an Admissions Committee.

Admissions Committee
As mentioned above, the Board of Studies may invite candidates for an interview / exam with an Admissions Committee. The committee is usually comprised of two to three scientists from the relevant field to which the applicant wishes to be accepted.  During the interview (usually lasting 30 to 60 minutes - depending on the requested area of study), the candidates are expected to demonstrate excellent knowledge and strong background of the subject matter and should be ready to answer questions about their M.Sc. research. Other parameters, such as: reasoning, creativity, analytical approach, etc., are also evaluated.
Following the interview, the committee reports its evaluation and opinion to the Board of Studies regarding admitting the candidate to FGS. Admission of candidates to studies is the prerogative of the Dean of the Graduate School.

Length of the Procedure
Once the application file is complete and ready, it is sent to the relevant Board of Studies for a review. This may take a couple of weeks. If the Board decides to invite the candidate for an interview, the school contacts the candidate and informs him/her of the decision. In most cases, the school sets the interview within two to three weeks from the Board's decision. Please note that in some cases, further consultations are needed before reaching a final decision. In such cases, the procedure could be extended by several weeks.

Appeals
Candidates whose applications have been rejected are entitled to submit a letter of appeal to the school. The FGS will review the appeal and re-evaluate the candidacy.
