How to Apply

Minimum Requirements
The Ph.D. program is open to citizens of all nations, regardless of religion, race or gender. Eligibility to apply is contingent upon:

1.

Having an M.Sc. degree from the Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS), confirmed by the Dean of Feinberg Graduate School (FGS) as entitled to continue onto doctoral degree studies at FGS.

2.

Transition to the Direct Ph.D. Track (applicable to 2nd year M.Sc. students at FGS – see details below).

3.

Having an M.Sc. degree (in a research track with thesis) from another accredited academic institution. Such a candidate's application will be considered on the basis of previous studies and research achievements, letters of recommendation and occasionally (but not necessarily) a personal interview.

 4.

Candidates from non-Israeli universities or institutions of higher learning are required, at the discretion of the Board of Studies, to submit GRE scores (in the general tests as well as in the subject they wish to apply to). The Feinberg Graduate School code for the GRE tests is 3398. Also, candidates whose mother tongue is not English are required, at the discretion of the Board of Studies, to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores as well.


Application Deadline
Applications may be submitted online all year round. There is no deadline.

Online Application Form for FGS Graduates 
Please note that an official approval by the FGS Dean is required prior to the beginning of your PhD studies. FGS Graduates must submit the following online application form.  This service is not available from midnight to 2 a.m. (Israel time). The complete and signed form must be submitted to Ms. Adi Shimron at FGS (either by eamil as an attachment, or by fax to 08-934-4114).

Online Application Form for External Candidates
External Candidates must submit the following online application form.

Online Monitoring of the Procedure
After submitting the online application form, candidates receive a message informing them that the application has been received. Later on (within a few hours or days) they also receive an email containing a User ID and a password, which enables them to access a particular URL and monitor online the status of their application. This service is not available from midnight to 2 a.m. (Israel time).

The Application File
Candidates who are not FGS graduates are required to submit an application file in which documents must be filed in the order specified below. The file should be a folio size (24cm x 34cm) plastic file with a transparent cover on top and a colored cover on the bottom (available in most stationary stores). Applicants should ensure that the color of their application file matches the color assigned to the field of studies of their choice. If the specific color is not available then a different color may be used as long as it is not one of the following colors:
Green:

Mathematics and Computer Sciences

Red:

Chemical Sciences

White:

Science Teaching

Blue: Life Sciences
Yellow:  Physical Sciences

Required Documents and their Order in the File
The first document listed below should be at the top of the file and in the following order:
1.

CV + one passport size photograph (attached to the top right-hand side)

2.

List of publications

3.

At least two letters of reference (one of these letters must be from your M.Sc. advisor) – see below.

4. M.Sc. certificate or degree approval
5. Official transcript of M.Sc. courses
6.

B.Sc. certificate or degree approval

7. Official transcript of B.Sc. courses
8. Title page of M.Sc. Thesis
9. A Xerox of ID (Israelis) or title page of passport (foreign applicants)
10.

A medical summary signed by the candidate's family physician

Foreign applicants must submit GRE scores (including subject test). Scores must be sent to us directly from the GRE Testing Center. Our institution code number is 3398. Foreign applicants, whose mother tongue is not English, must submit TOEFL scores. This requirement, and the evaluation of the results, is the prerogative of the relevant Board of Studies.


About the Letters of Reference
1.

The subject of each reference letter should include the applicant name followed by the phrase: "Ph.D. Applicant".

2.

Reference letters may be attached to the application file

3.

Letters in sealed envelopes may be attached to the application file

4. Reference letters that arrive at the FGS prior to the application file are held until the corresponding application file is received.
5. Reference letters may be sent by mail, fax, or email
6.

 All letters received by the FGS are filed upon arrival. Applicants should monitor and follow the progress of their application online.


Prerequisite for a Review by the Board of Studies
Only complete files (containing all the aforesaid documents) will be referred to the Board of Studies for review.

Finding a Research Group
In mathematics and computer science, in the physical sciences, in chemical sciences and in Science Teaching, a candidate is required to make an arrangement with a potential advisor (a senior ranking WIS research staff member), prior to the submission of the application file and the review of the application by the Board of Studies. In life sciences a candidate must find an advisor only after being accepted to the school. The final acceptance, however, is contingent upon arranging with an advisor to agree to supervise the student’s doctoral dissertation (in life sciences these arrangements must be completed within 10 weeks). Please note that the school will not allow a student to start his/her Ph.D. if the potential advisor would be on a leave of absence for more than 3 months during the first year of the students' studies.Information on potential research groups may be found through the following links:
