If a research proposal has not been submitted, nor a request for an extension been made (at least one month prior to the deadline for submission), or if such a request has been denied by the Dean, the candidate's studies will be terminated. The Examination on the Research Proposal The Chair of the Board of Studies will appoint an examining committee of at least two scientists to interview the student, examine the proposal and determine the student's ability to pursue the chosen topic and his/her general knowledge of the field. The student advisor(s) may not be present at the examination. The examiners will report, in writing, to the Board of Studies as to the acceptability of the proposal and the student's qualifications to continue his/her studies. Their recommendation will be based on the candidate's academic abilities, the standard of the proposed research project, and the feasibility of concluding it within the time allotted to doctoral studies. If they deem it necessary, they may suggest changes to the proposal, the time-schedule and the course obligations.
Approval of the Research Proposal The recommendations of the Committee and of the Chair of the Board of Studies must be approved by the Dean. Upon approval by the Dean, the student formally enters second year status. If the proposal is not approved, the Board of Studies will submit its recommendations concerning continuation of the student's studies to the Dean .
