WIS Policy on Common-law Relationship
Students and Postdoctoral Fellows who are defined as being in a common-law relationship are entitled to the rights granted students and Postdoctoral Fellows who are married couples, under the following conditions:

1.

Common-law couples, who request to equate their status to that of married couples for purposes of determining their rights as students at the Graduate School, will submit an application to the Graduate School prepared as an affidavit that attests to their being a common-law couple in accordance with the criteria set by law. They need to attest to have been a working family relationship and a joint household for a period of at least three years prior to the submission of the application.

2.

The couple will undertake to inform the Graduate School administration of any change in their status as a common-law couple, immediately following such a change. If at any time it is discovered that their status was not that initially of a common-law couple, or that due to a change in their personal status they are no longer considered as such, they will be required to return any monies that they received or the value of any benefits awarded due to their status, with the addition of interest and linkage as legally required.

3.

According to the laws of the State of Israel, common-law status affords each partner benefits and obligations, and has legal ramifications on various aspects of life. It is therefore recommended that students wishing to be recognized as a common-law couple receive legal advice as to the legal consequences derived from this status, before submitting the request.
